A Life-Changing Breast Reduction?

Down-sizing Can Be Delightful!

The life-changing impact of breast reduction surgery cannot be overstated for women who struggle with disproportionately large breasts.

In addition to feeling self-conscious and uncomfortable, other reasons for breast reduction surgery include a desire to:

  • Reduce the stress the neck, shoulders, and back
  • Improve posture
  • Make exercising, and even breathing, easier
  • Have firmer, perkier breasts
  • Avoid rashes that can develop in areas where skin rubs against skin and clothing
  • Expand fashion options and wear more comfortable clothing
  • Enjoy the added benefit of a lift, better proportions, and improved symmetry

Who Has Breast Reduction Surgery?

The age range for women having breast reduction surgery varies dramatically, from teens to patients in their twilight years.

Excess breast tissue can develop right after puberty for some women, while for others, pregnancy and weight gain contribute to the development of larger breasts later in life.

Dr. Restifo sees patients from across the spectrum. Some carry extra weight all over their body while others only have extra tissue in their breasts, making them appear overweight elsewhere and making it difficult to find flattering clothing.  Generally, women seek out breast reduction surgery when their breasts are preventing them from enjoying life the way they want to.

What Will My Scars Look Like?

The two main incision options for breast reduction surgery are known as a lollipop incision and an anchor incision. Both involve a circular incision around the areola and a vertical line incision from the nipple area downward to the crease below the breast.

The circular incision allows for the nipple and areola to be re-positioned to a more attractive location on the breast and the vertical incision allows for the removal of excess skin and glandular tissue below the nipple. Most women also ask for their areola to be resized to ensure a proportionate outcome.

An anchor incision is similar to a lollipop incision but also includes an incision along the crease below the breast tissue. This is commonly used when a considerable amount of tissue is being removed.

As always, a good surgeon will minimize the scarring by making incisions in the most discrete places possible.

Will Insurance Cover Breast Reduction Surgery?

Sometimes your insurance carrier will cover some or all of the cost of surgery when the size of your breasts are causing other health-related issues (e.g. back and neck pain). Sometimes these issues can be resolved with physical therapy so most insurance providers will request documentation demonstrating that you’ve tried other solutions before seeking surgical correction.
