Fixing Breast Asymmetry

Fixing Breast Asymmetry: If you critically examine any part of your body that comes in pairs – ears, eyes, feet, etc. – you’ll see that each pair is a little “off”. Breast asymmetry is no exception.

It is perfectly normal to have uneven breasts. In a recent study of a 100 women who wanted a breast augmentation,about 88% recognized some degree of breast asymmetry. While sometimes these differences are subtle, there are situations when surgical correction is a great option.

It’s important to recognize there are several different kinds of asymmetry. Breasts can be unmatched with respect to:

  • size
  • shape
  • position and size of the nipple

Sometimes breasts are unmatched in all three ways. Fortunately, surgery can help.

For many women, even moderate asymmetry can make a big impact in terms of comfort and confidence in certain situations and clothing, like tank tops, bathing suits, or form-fitting tops.

If you’re thinking about correcting breast asymmetry, the first step is to schedule a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon with significant breast surgery experience. During an exam, your surgeon will determine the severity of asymmetry and whether you’re a good candidate for surgery.  If the asymmetry is too mild to correct in a significant way, an honest surgeon will be upfront and simply tell you you’re not a good candidate. Sometimes your breasts look great, despite mild asymmetry, and it’s not worth worrying about.

How Can I Fix Breast Asymmetry?

Breast asymmetry can be addressed surgically with either a breast lift, a breast augmentation, a breast reduction or a combination of procedures.

Sometimes it is possible to operate only on one breast to correct the breast asymmetry, but that’s rarely the case. It’s usually the more subtle degrees of asymmetry where you get away with just doing something to one side.

In a scenario where a patient likes the shape of one breast, it can be used as a “model” for the other breast. However it’s hard to match the size of a breast without also addressing the amount of skin (which will be more significant on the larger breast), and the location of the nipple (which may be lower on the larger breast).  Often, both breasts require surgery to get the best possible symmetry.

Can I Expect “Perfect” Breasts After Surgery?

Asymmetry cases are very challenging because they’re are a lot of asymmetries. There are a lot of things that need to be modified and sometimes, they’re at cross purposes.

While an expert can make you less uneven, it’s nearly impossible to make your breasts perfectly symmetrical. A 95% correction is considered a good outcome and makes most patients really happy. It opens up new wardrobe options and increases self-esteem for many patients.

What should I Look for in a plastic surgeon?

When searching for a surgeon to fix breast asymmetry, the following is really important:

  • Experience: Find someone who specializes in breast surgery and has significant experience fixing asymmetry. A plastic surgeon who splits their time between facial procedures and breast/body procedures is probably not going to get the best results.
  • Honesty: Find a surgeon whose treatment plan makes sense to you. Ask for explanations and ensure you feel they are being upfront about what’s possible, rather than simply telling you what you want to hear.
  • Expectations: Be sure you have realistic expectations. Share photos that demonstrate your desired outcome and ask if that seems possible. Ask the doctor if 3D imaging is available so you know what to expect.
  • Results: Look at before and after photos of patients who have had breast asymmetry surgically corrected. See if you like the results.
